Flower boxes are a gardener’s favorite owing to their flexibility. You can use them for a myriad of purposes.
Use them as a standalone on your patio or balcony filled with annuals and perennials. For example, install one as a flower window box to add curb appeal to your home. Or add some interest to your deck with a railing planter.
You Can Plant Anything in a Flower Box
Even though they’re called flower boxes, you’re not limited to planting flowers. For example, you can use them as a planter for vegetables.
Of course, if you’re set on using a flower box for their namesake, there’s no end to what you can plant.
Trailing plants like ivy, petunias, vinca, and sweet potato vines add depth and visual appeal to flower boxes. Annuals such as salvia, geraniums, coleus, zinnia, and begonias are great additions. And don’t forget perennials and even some dwarf conifers.
Our Flower Boxes Offer Plenty of Space
Our flower boxes give you plenty of planting space regardless of what you plant.
First, they’re 10 inches deep, allowing lots of space for root development.
Next, you can select from two lengths – 14-1/2 or 21-1/2 inches. The larger flower box version easily accommodates four to six plants, depending on your select varieties.
So that lets you be creative and select different plants with different colors and textures. Or use one plant type to create a mass display.
Resin Planters are Built to Last
Our flower boxes use Artstone materials. Resin and stone combine to create a lightweight yet incredibly durable planter. They’ll last infinitely longer than imported plastic flower boxes. And they won’t rot like wood planters or rust like metal planters.
Instead, you’ll enjoy these flower boxes for years on end. They’re frost-free, waterproof, and UV-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about storing them over the winter.
And when you sit them on a patio, they include a footed bottom that allows some space under the planter for airflow for healthier plant roots.
Our Flower Boxes are Self-Watering
Our flower boxes bring even more to the table because they’re self-watering. They have a sub-irrigated reservoir at the bottom that keeps your plants hydrated. So no more worries about underwatering your precious plants.
The flower boxes also include a removable drainage plug. Drainage is critical to prevent water from pooling, which leads to root rot that can kill plants.
You can count on Root & Vessel for all your indoor and outdoor decorative planters.
How should I pot my plant?
Add a small amount of perlite medium on top of the Water-Minder area. Finish filling the planter to the planter’s rim with a light to medium weight potting mix. Routinely adding plant food, according to plant’s directions, will dramatically increase the health, beauty and fullness of the plants in your Ella Flower Box.
What is the Ella Flower Box made of?
The Ella Flower Box is constructed from Artstone material, which is a proprietary blend of resin, colorant, and crushed limestone. The result is a durable, weather-resistant planter that has a beautiful, marbled look throughout the material. Unlike other planters on the market with a painted finish, Artstone resin planters will never lose their pattern and can be used both indoors or outside.
Is the Ella Flower Box self-watering?
Yes! The Ella Flower Box has a built-in self-watering system called the Water-Minder. This removable insert creates a sub-irrigated reservior at the bottom of the planter that allows water to seep through the screen. Your plants then absorb the water as needed.
How does the Water-Minder prevent overwatering & underwatering?
The Water-Minder self-watering feature prevents overwatering and underwatering as long as the drainage plug on the bottom of the planter is removed. This is because the water level will always drop to the top of the overflow drain. Your plant will then absorb the water as needed.
If you're worried about underwatering and/or if it's hard to tell if the plant is dry, then we recommend watering frequently to avoid any chance of underwatering. That ensures there is always water available in the reservoir. Just make sure the drainage plug is removed so that the water does not overfill the reservoir, potentially causing watering-logging and root-rot.
Do I need a saucer when using the planter indoors?
A saucer is not needed when using our planters indoors unless you decide to remove the drainage plug from the bottom of the planter. The only downside to keeping the drainage plug in is that you have to be mindful of overwatering. That is because with the drainage plug left in, any excess water will no longer automatically drop to the top of the overflow drain.
Does the Ella Flower Box have drainage holes?
There is a removable drainage plug on the bottom of the planter. This allows the water level to drop to the top of the overflow drain.
When using the planter outdoors, remove the drainage plug to prevent water-logging and root-rot.
How much does the Ella Flower Box weigh?
The weight varies by size as follows:
- 14½-Inch: 2.6 lbs.
- 21½-Inch: 3.8 lbs.
Where is the Ella Flower Box manufactured?
The Ella Flower Box is manufactured and imported from our partner in Malaysia.
